Notas sobre a popularização do futebol em salvador, 1901 – 1912

Neste trabalho analisamos alguns aspectos que abarcaram a difusão e popularização do futebol em Salvador entre 1906 e 1912. Através da leitura de jornais da época indagamos como este esporte, introduzido pelas elites locais em um esforço civilizatório, foi apropriado pelos populares e incorporado ao seu universo cultural constituindo-se, portanto, em uma forma de resistência popular à hegemonização de uma cultura moderna pelas elites. Embora pensada por e para as classes altas, o futebol foi ressignificado pelas classes populares. A expansão deste esporte, seguramente, surpreendeu as elites, que o entendia enquanto um elemento de distinção social. Ao final, consideramos que a difusão do futebol, para além da intenção dos seus idealizadores, foi possível graças à lógica do jogo. Constituída de regras simples e materiais que podiam ser facilmente adaptados, o futebol gozava de grande inteligibilidade, o que certamente facilitou a sua popularização numa dimensão talvez não desejada pelas elites soteropolitanas.

In this work, we analyze some aspects that involved the diffusion and popularization of the foot-ball at Salvador between 1906 and 1912. Through the reading of newspaper of the time, we inquire how this sport, introduced by the local urban elites as a civilization effort, was appropriated by the popular groups and incorporated to the cultural universe of them, constituting itself, therefore, in a way of popular resistance to hegemony of modern culture by the elites. Though thought by and for the high classes, the foot-ball was re-meant by the popular classes. The expansion of this sport, certainly, surprised the elites, who understood the foot-ball as a social distinction element. At the end, we consider that the diffusion of the foot-ball beyond of the creators”s intentions was it possible thanks the game logic. Composed of simple rules and materials that could be easily adapted, the foot-ball enjoyed of great intelligibility that which certainly facilitated its popularization in one a dimension perhaps unwanted by the local elites.
